Franklin Park Conservatory from High Road Quilter

We went to the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio recently, and rather than letting the photos sit in storage, I decided to share some of them with you. It was a really hot day, but it was enjoyable because everything was so incredibly beautiful.

Inside, of course, there are beautiful plants with beautiful foliage. There are different climates in different rooms.

There is a display of lots of wonderful bonsai trees.

There is also artwork. The work of Dale Chihuly is featured, but there is plenty more if you look carefully.

There are more plants on the roof. I ...

Progress on Tuxedo Vest from High Road Quilter

I bought a bunch of African fabrics. I know them as Kitenge, which is what they are called in East Africa. They are known as Ankara in West Africa. I showed them all in a Youtube video.

I fussy cut some of them and am appliquéing them to the Tuxedo Vest quilt. It looks very different now from where it started. It will be finished shortly.

Looking at it now, I am reminded of a Jane Sassaman quilt that was a garden. I had put it on my mental list of quilts to make a long time ago. I can ...

Quilting and Life Updates from High Road Quilter

I have continued my index card a day project, usually making many more than one a day. This drawing is based on a photo I took during the first neighborhood tour we went to. Most of the videos I have watched about drawing say to start with a photo or actual items instead of using your imagination. It lets you really see the shapes and the shading when you have something real in front of you.

I am really happy with this drawing because it does look like a person and a dog, even though I do need to work ...

15 Minutes to Stitch Updates from High Road Quilter

This is a big recap of several weeks of stitching, or lack thereof. I interspersed some photographs I took during these weeks for interest. There was a walking historical tour the library was sponsoring, so most of the photos are from that day.

15 Minutes to Stitch Week 18

I tried to work on Spicy Stars blocks, but realized pretty quickly that I needed to do something simpler, so I worked on some Unallocated scrap blocks. All the blocks are the same, and since I am using scrap fabric, any fabric will work for the most part, there is very ...

Quilt Reveal: Be a Peacock in a World of Ducks from High Road Quilter

I was watching an episode of Quilt Nerd by Mary Fons which featured Liberty of London fabrics and one of the photos included a quilt of a peacock in a tree made with Liberty fabrics. It was one of those quilts I just had to make.

I don't have any Liberty fabric so when I went to the Cave of Wonders I was handed the same stack of fabric that I used to make my last peacock quilt, BeUnique. Copying the style or mood of last peacock quilt wasn't what I had in mind, but it's never ...

Quilt Shuffle from High Road Quilter

As you know, I have been working on this October Halloween House. I was saving the story of this quilt until the reveal, but I will share it now as a reward to you for following my WIP posts.

Once upon a time, I lived within walking distance of a quilt shop. I knew what a treasure that was. I took several classes there, and sent my daughter for a week of Quilt Camp. I bought some black and red fabric for a quilt when the box store wasn't selling black and red fabrics. Some miscellaneous tools and supplies ...

2021: Week 50 of 15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

When last we met in my last post, I told you that we had our family birthday gathering. It went well, and with a clean house, I rolled right into a meeting with the customers at work.  My desk faces the wall, so my zoom screen behind me shows the dining room table in the living room. It kept me from making any quilting messes, but I didn't have any time to make a mess either, so it all worked out.

Lots of long hours. Although I didn't have a time zone change to deal with like others ...

2021: Week 48 of 15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

2021:  Week 48 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

I spent my week getting ready for the gathering and having the gathering. We had a good time, even though some members of our family was not able to come.

I spent a couple of sessions to put the remainder of the pieces on the Halloween block. I plan to have one or more quilt finishes before the end of the year to offset the many quilts I have started.

2021: Week 44 of 15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

I continued taking lots of photographs this week, and have gone through my October folder to see if there were any other photos to show you.

Most of these photos are taken with an iphone. Since I am taking so many photos, I thought I would try to submit some to Shutterstock.

They rejected all of the ones I submitted, mostly due to compression and focus. It's okay. I am not upset. I figured that if they were usable, I should try. If they aren't, I can share them on my blog without worrying about it.

I think ...

2021: Week 43 of 15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

With the shorter days and cooler weather, I have been focusing on getting my house ready for the winter. Even though I have been spending most of my time at home anyway, I feel the need to be ready to continue to do that for the winter.

I am also working full time, doing my favorite part of the project.

Most of the photos in this post were taken while I was looking for closeup photos.

2021:  Week 43 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

Another wimpy report. I started the purple postage stamp block. I have the rows done, just ...

Weekly Photo Challenge from High Road Quilter

The theme of this week's photo challenge is Extreme Close Up. I took several photos, and decided to submit this one. It had rained at night so I was able to get another photo of  my neighbor's roses while they are still blooming.

This Week's Photo Challenge from High Road Quilter

The theme of this week's photo challenge was "Stranger".  I haven't seen many strangers the last couple of years so it is difficult for me to show you a recent photo. I have taken photos of strangers though, so I thought I would show those to you instead. It was a part of a 365 photo challenge in 2010. There was a Waterfire show in Columbus.  I asked strangers if I could take their photo and post online, and most people said yes.

The all said yes, except this guy.

Next's week challenge is "extreme closeup". I ...

2021: Week 41 of 15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

Fall is in full swing here in Ohio.

The temperatures are cooler, and the rain pools on the colorful leaves.

I've shown you silver dollars before. This one made me think of a ghost with the two eyes.

2021:  Week 41 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

This week, I sewed up the columns of Tuxedo Vest and completed the quilt top. I also completed a block for the Postage Stamp quilt. I pressed both of them and photographed them and showed both of them to you in my last post. Then I started the next Postage Stamp block.

15 ...

Weekly Photo Challenge from High Road Quilter

The photo challenge for this week is something that starts with the letter A. As usual, I wanted to make it easy, and looked in the refrigerator for an apple. Luckily, I still had one left. I also grabbed the almond milk to make the photo a little bit more interesting. There is not a lot you can do to make an almond milk container and an apple interesting, so I went for a pink background and a closeup.

Next week's challenge is "A stranger".

October Pictures and Weekly Stitching Recap from High Road Quilter

We are just a couple of days into October, but Zeus and I walked a different route, so there are plenty of photos to share, even if some of them are weeds.

I was able to fit even more burgers into the pan after I took this photo. So nice to be able to make the whole batch at once.

My go-to recipe is to smash one or more (usually precooked) grain (oatmeal, quinoa, bulgur, bread, etc) and one or more type of beans (chick peas, black beans, kidney beans), and some spices or sauces.  The spice combination determines whether ...

2021: Week 37 of 15 Minutes to Stitch and Photo from High Road Quilter

The theme of the week's photo is "Something that makes you happy". This was an easy one so here is Zeus on my porch. I am going to have a hard time with next week's theme "Someone under the age of 12". I am not around young children, and I don't want to be a stalker at the local school! Even Zeus is older than 12.

While I am looking at the September photos, I am including more of them in this post.

There were a lot of pinks and purples in my life lately.

There are ...

Photography Challenge from High Road Quilter

The theme for this week's photography challenge was "over-exposed." As usual, I didn't think about it at all, so I went through my August folder. I was sure I would be able to find at least one photo that was over-exposed in there, even though I do try to delete the rejects as I go along.

I figured I could help a photo along by over-exposing it on the photo editing program, but I am presenting the photo to you as I had taken it.

Here it is, edited to the max.

Next week's theme is "Something ...

Photo Challenge Photos from High Road Quilter

I am tagging along Kate's family and taking photos that follow the prompts they are using. I'm not consistent in posting the photo challenge photos, so there are two week's worth here.

The first one was Feet. I immediately thought of sewing machine feet, so I am glad Kate didn't go in that direction for her photo.

The next one was Optical Illusion. My mind went to the many optical illusion quilts I want to make.  I don't think I have made a successful one yet. But as I was walking Zeus, I have seen ...

More Additions to the Quote Quilt from High Road Quilter

I wrote my first post on this blog on August 13, 2008, which makes today the thirteenth anniversary of my blog. This blog is an extension to another blog which is no longer available to the public. Even though I was not new to blogging, I made a low key entrance to this blog by posting as if I had been posting here all along.

I have thoroughly enjoyed blogging and have no plans on stopping. There are so many benefits to the blog.

  • It provides a historical record of my quilting.
  • It gives me motivation to keep making so ...

Productive Quilting Week from High Road Quilter

Kate is doing a photography challenge with her family, and I am tagging along by following their prompts. This week's prompt was Black and White. I decided I would take a photo from my August folder and change it to black and white. I couldn't choose one so I have two black and white photos in this post.

2021:  Week 33 of 15 Minutes to Stitch

I added more motifs to the Quote quilt. I have finished quilting all of the blocks, and just need to do an inspection to see if there is more quilting needed on ...
